About the project
The three West Flemish university colleges HOWEST, KATHO en KHBO all have a wide range of knowledge and expertise in various areas such as communication, mechatronics, logistics, polymer technology and social economy. West Flemish companies, especially the smaller SMEs and the non-profit sector, do not have as yet sufficient access to this knowledge and expertise.
By developing a complementary network of easily accessible expertise and service provision centres (LEDs) the Province of West Flanders aims to more swiftly disclose the knowledge and expertise of the university colleges.
SMEs and organizations are thus presented with creative problem solutions. They are stimulated to stay alert to the latest developments and can count on solid support to put these developments into practice themselves. This should eventually result in a dynamic business environment that is fully aware of the importance of strategic innovation.
The university colleges also benefit from the development of the LEDs: by working together in a complementary manner, means can be used more efficiently. Systematic input from the industry furthermore results in a continuous relevant and up-to-date range of training courses.
The project is supported by Centre of Entrepreneurs Kortrijk, which takes care of the practical coordination, and by the Innovation Centre of West Flanders.
The LEDs were approved in June 2008 as an Objective 2 project within the scope of the call for knowledge innovation and economics. Thanks to additional support from Europe and Flanders, seven LEDs could be activated in 2008. This number was increased in the following years so that support could be given quickly and efficiently in the most diverse sectors. SMEs as well as other organizations can call upon these LEDs for advice, problem analysis, practical problem solutions, and the deployment/guidance of a trainee or thesis student.
A fascinating interaction between education and the business environment, which will without a doubt give entrepreneurship and creativity in West Flanders an additional boost!
